NIGERIA ENDORSE CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS AND BRIDGES IN NASSARAWA

Federal Government of Nigeria approve US$248.6m for construction of Road and Bridges in Nasarawa State.

The Nigerian Government have given approval for the construction of of roads and bridges in Nasarawa states. The Federal government have set aside about US$248.6m for these projects.

Some of these projects include; rehabilitation of Lafia-Obi-Awe-Tunga road, Nasarawa-Loko road with Alushi loop, Loko-Oweto bridge across River Benue and Wamba- Wanse road.

According Minister of State II for Power, Works & Housing, Suleiman Zarma, the Nasarawa road project contracts are about seventeen years old and since then the projects have suffered setbacks. The setbacks are mostly because of non-payment of contractors, poor budgetary provision and wrong design benchmark.

For example; in 2001, Messers Torno Internationale limited started handling the contract for the rehabilitation of Nasarawa-Loko road. This was during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime and it was at a cost of US$15.1m. There was a  re-awarding of the contract to Messers Gitto Costruzuoni General (Nigeria) limited in January 2006 for completion. This was because the project faced abandonment after reaching up to 21km+ 200 earthworks.

Also the Loko-Oweto Bridge across River Benue, is currently still at 15.41% completion, despite starting from 2nd November, 2011 by Messers Reynolds Construction Company (Nig) limited at the cost of US $100.8m. In June 2015, there was an augmentation of the contract to US$144.1m with completion date extended to 29th November, 2018.

The construction of Wa’mba- Wanse road awarded to Messers Uniglobe construction engineering limited commenced on 24th January 2015. The expectation is that it will be complete on 29th June 2019 at the cost of US$39.7m.

Meanwhile, Messers Triacta Nigeria limited started rehabilitating 84. 5km Lafia- Obi-Awe-Tunga road on 20 September, 2010 at the cost of US $22.1m. The project have been substantially completed and due for commissioning soon.
