OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE STRATEGIES FOR HYDROPOWER IN AFRICA

Most people often overlook the fact that hydropower is the world’s largest source of renewable energy – accounting for more than 60 percent of global renewable energy generation. In Africa, hydropower is a major source of energy, however, the operation and maintenance of these facilities are not always undertaken effectively.  Thereby, leading to the underutilisation of hydro facilities on the continent.

The World Bank, publishes this insightful handbook that outlines the best practices to maintain hydro facilities in emerging markets & developing economies. A key distinguishing feature of hydropower is its potential longevity. A hydropower facility can operate for 100 years or more, compared with 20–30 years for most other generation technologies. In fact, nearly half of the world’s hydropower capacity is over 30 years old and many facilities are over 100 years old.
