Construction of La Gogue dam is set for completion in June according to Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) in Seychelles. Speaking during an interview, PUC spokesman said 70% of the project has been completed which will raise the nation’s main reservoir by 6 metres.
The spokesman, Erna Victor an officer responsible for the project at the PUC said the embankment filling up to the existing dam crest has been completed. That they are currently increasing the height of the embankment by the additional 6 metres.
According to Victor, a total of 10 layers has been completed upstream which is a height of approximately 3 metres. He also said all the pipes, valves and fittings in the intake tower and tunnel has been replaced.
Meanwhile, the concrete top has been demolished and the existing footbridge has been removed. This will help increase the intake tower height by an additional 6 metres.
Once the dam is operational, focus will be shifted to the second component of the project which is the construction of a new water treatment plant. The plant will have the capacity to treat 4,400 cubic metres of water per day.
The project which is worth US$13.6 million is a joint fund from African Development Bank and Seychelles’ government, with Chinese firm Sinohydro as it contractor.
