SOUTH AFRICA TO CONSTRUCT 6,000 HOUSES BY 2019
South Africa plans construction of 6,000 housing units by 2019.
The South African Minister for Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu, at recently concluded 11th Annual Govan Mbeki Awards, confirmed that the department is set to construct 6,000 houses in South Africa by 2019. She said the department had already delivered over 4.6 million houses and subsidies.
Sisulu said, said the department have constructed 1,029 houses per day and if this figure is multiplied by an average family of five(5), it is estimated that shelter would have been provided to 5,145 people per day.
The Department of Human Settlements established a ‘National Housing Needs Register’, which is database that captures all those who need houses and other form of housing assistance. It was was set up to ensure credibility in process of allocating houses. The department is also working with municipalities to get a credible national centralized database, which will include military veterans whose information will be gotten from the Department of Military Veterans.
Also, The Government Employees Housing Scheme (GEHS) will be transferred to the Department of Human Settlements. to help carter for the segment not covered by the FLISP (Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme).
The Minister urged the private sector to partner with the department to achieve this societal transformation.
