STERLING BANK RECOGNIZED FOR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT

Sterling Bank have been recognized for its participation in advocating for a clean and sustainable environment.

Nigeria’s pioneer waste recycling firm, Wecyclers Nigeria Limited have given recognition to Sterling Bank Plc for its commitment to the sustainable implementation of the Nigerian Sustainable Banking Principles (NSBPs), which was achieved through its Sterling Environmental Makeover (STEM) programme and recycling of waste materials at Sterling Bank’s head office in Lagos.

This recognition was awarded to Sterling Bank at a ceremony held at Sterling Towers (the bank’s head office in Lagos) which marked one year of Sterling Bank’s waste recycling initiative.

According to Mr. Wale Adebiyi, the Chief Executive Officer of Wecyclers; “Out of the 6,024 kilogrammes of waste materials sorted, segregated and separated between November 2016 and November 2017, Sterling Bank earned 38,718 Redeemable Green Points.”

Sterling Bank did not only show interest in waste recycling, but also in other areas of sustainable environment, as it engaged other stakeholders to clean the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos as part of the STEM programme. This inititive helped to improve the challenging environment at the Computer Village and also created awareness on the need for sustaining a clean environment in Lagos and other parts of the country.

Chief Marketing Officer of Sterling Bank, Mr. Henry Bassey, while speaking after the bank was recognized for its various initiative that  promote environmental sustainability practices, said the bank has also inaugurated the ReCyclart competition to promote environmental sustainability. 16 finalist from the screening exercise have also been invited to showcase a mini sample of their proposed work.

Mr. Bassey said, four grand prize winners will emerge from each zone which are Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and Abuja. The grand prize for each winner is a reward of N1,000,000 and a sponsored solo installation/exhibition in one public park or space.

Mr. Imaji Ojonimi, who is the Chief Risk Officer of Sterling Bank, said in the nearest future, the bank will extend the recycling project (which currently limited to the head office) to other branches.

During the ceremony, Assistant General Manager, Special Services, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Jide Onayiga also commended Sterling Bank  for recycling its waste materials, as he noted that Lagos, with its large population is already contending with high volume of waste materials generated as well as its negative impact on the environment.
