Water is essential for life, because without it we almost cannot survive. And before taking any, we must ensure that it is good for our health. But Residents of Tetu constituency in Kenya has been drinking unhealthy water since the 1970s, according to an audit report.
The audit by Auditor General Edward Ouko was on behalf of the chairman of the Public Investments Committee at the Nyeri County Assembly, Erastus Muriuki.
The report shows that Tetu Aberdare Water and Sanitation Company (TEAWASCO) produced 3.7 million cubic metres of water. But only 2.3 million cubic metres reached customers. This means that 1.4 million cubic metres were lost to the system.
According to the report, TEAWASCO was using asbestos cement pipes to supply water in Tetu Thegenge area since 1975. This has led to burst pipes that have affected residents of Tetu constituency from having portable drinking water. The report said that the pipes are too old and are dangerous to people’s health.
The Audit reports noted that the nation needs to change the pipes or risk increasing more problem for residents in Tetu constituency. Meanwhile, the cost to replace these pipes is about Sh71 million.
